What to Expect in a Couples Counselling Session at Relate

Considering couples counselling can feel like a big step, especially if you're unsure what to expect. At Relate Avon, we aim to make the process as comfortable and supportive as possible for you and your partner. Whether you're dealing with communication issues, trust problems, or simply want to strengthen your bond, our counselling sessions provide a safe space to explore your relationship and work towards positive change.

So, what happens during a Relate couples counselling session, and how can it help you and your partner?

The First Session

In your first session at Relate Avon you and your partner will meet with a relationship counsellor to discuss your reasons for seeking counselling. The session will be up to 50 minutes long and is a time to explore the issues you’re facing and your goals for the process.

The counsellor will make time in that first session to see you both separately. What you say in your individual time is always confidential to you.

At the end of the session, the counsellor will discuss next steps with you, including the best ways that Relate Avon can help. Occasionally this may mean referring people outside of Relate to get different specialist support.

A Safe and Confidential Space

At Relate, we believe in creating a safe and supportive environment where both partners feel heard and respected. All sessions are confidential, meaning you can discuss sensitive issues without fear of them being shared outside of the counselling room. Find out more details on our confidentiality policy.

It’s not unusual to feel nervous or hesitant at the start, especially if you’re not used to talking about your relationship in such a structured way. However, our counsellors are trained to help put you at ease, encouraging open communication in a way that feels comfortable for you both.

During Counselling

The counsellor’s role is not to fix your problems for you but to empower you to work through them together. They will help you in identifying and understanding behaviours, communication styles, and emotions that might be contributing to conflict or disconnection. Through understanding yours, your partner’s and your relationship patterns, you can think about changes that might help your relationship thrive.

Your counsellor will support you here too and may sometimes suggest straightforward tasks or assignments to try between sessions.

How Long Will It Take?

The length of your counselling journey depends on the nature of the issues you’re addressing and your goals. Some couples find that a few sessions are sufficient, while others prefer longer-term support. There is no set duration: your counsellor will work with you to determine the right way forward. You can end counselling whenever it feels appropriate for you or your partner.

Moving Forward

Relationship counselling at Relate is about more than solving immediate problems — it's about helping you build a stronger, healthier relationship for the future. With the guidance of a skilled counsellor, you can learn to navigate challenges, deepen your connection, and move forward with renewed confidence.

If you're ready to take that step, contact Relate Avon today to book your first session and begin your journey towards a better relationship.
